Dog-friendly places to stay!
A soulful, dog-friendly guide to one of South Africa’s quirkiest Karoo gems
Nestled in a dusty fold of the Sneeuberg mountains, Nieu-Bethesda is a place where time stretches, paws slow down, and you can breathe deeply again. It’s a tiny village in the Great Karoo that feels like a living poem – art-filled, eccentric, weathered, and wild. And best of all? It’s one of those rare places where dogs aren’t just tolerated – they’re welcomed, tail and all.
Here’s our personal guide to where to eat, sleep, and wander in Nieu-Bethesda – with your dog by your side.
The Bethesda Tower Accommodation
This magical spot feels like something out of a fairytale – with the Fairy-Tale Tower, Charming Priory, and the Heritage House all offering their own kind of charm. The gardens are a wonderland for curious noses, and the surrounding mountain views are pure Karoo peace.
🐾 Dog notes: Secure garden, friendly hosts, and lots of shade for afternoon naps. My dogs gave it four paws up.
Desert Dew Guesthouse (Confirm pet policy ahead of time)
A tranquil space with gorgeous desert light and a welcoming feel. They often accommodate pets on request — worth checking in if you’re planning ahead.
Something Different?
There are a few off-the-grid farm stays and artists’ cottages that love dogs – keep an eye on Dog Stay listings or email me and I’ll help you sniff them out.
The Karoo Lamb Restaurant & Brewery
One of the most iconic food spots in the village – they serve hearty, local fare and offer craft beer brewed right there. Dogs are welcome in the garden area, where mine lounged lazily while I had possibly the best roosterkoek of my life.
Die Waenhuis
A hidden gem just off the main road, with generous portions, slow-cooked goodness, and a shady, dog-welcoming courtyard. It’s a great place to settle in after a long walk.
The Village Inn Café
Perfect for tea and cake under the trees. My dog tried to steal a scone, so consider that a glowing review.
🐾 Dog tip: Always keep a collapsible bowl and water on hand – most places are happy to bring water, but Karoo days can get warm quickly.
The Owl House & Camel Yard
You can’t visit Nieu-Bethesda without seeing Helen Martins’ haunting, magical cement and glass creation. While dogs aren’t allowed inside the Owl House (understandably), the surrounding area is full of walkable intrigue and art. Take a photo near the camel sculptures with your pooch!
The Dusty Streets of the Village
One of my favourite things? Just walking. No agenda. Just wandering through the winding, sleepy streets, meeting local artists, waving at neighbours, and stopping to sniff the occasional bush (them, not me).
Mountain Walks and Farm Trails
Chat with your accommodation hosts – many offer access to longer walking paths into the surrounding veld. Early mornings and sunset strolls are especially beautiful here. The silence is golden.
Because it’s the kind of place where muddy paws are part of the art.
Where the pace is soft, the streets are dusty, and there’s room for both people and pets to just be.
